The covid19 situation has been a messy affair for every single person on the planet, as well as 99% of the world’s businesses. Those businesses hit hardest though have been those who operate in the hospitality sector. A World Disaster Strikes March 2020!
Covid19 came out of nowhere. News of a local epidemic in Wuhan was spreading and gaining momentum, by around mid February onwards, it was clear this was not just ‘something that happens in another country,’ at least as fas as the West was concerned.
Some media outlets were attempting to paint this as ‘The End Of Times’ and ‘The End Of The World’ and the fear in people, governments and small business was growing, with a calamity bomb detonating to the closure of all small businesses.
Lockdown Looming For Non-Essential Businesses
In times of trouble the first things to go are the “non essentials’ and this include the hospitality sector. Places where large numbers of people would gather to either socialise, work, keep fit and generally meet in large numbers in public spaces.
Hospitality businesses have had it tough, having to reinvent their business models, rewrite their business plans weekly to navigate unchartered waters as well as survive on the limited handouts from a flawed tory government (if at all they were eligible)!
Light At The End Of The Tunnel!
Late February 2021, it was announced that the economy, as well as the country would slowly be reopened. In England at least:
- 12 April –Restaurants and pub gardens will be allowed to serve customers sitting outdoors – including alcohol; customers can meet in a group of up to six people from different households; a maximum of two households can meet to form a group of any size
- 17 May – Hospitality venues can seat customers indoors; parties can be made up of a maximum of six people or two households of any size; groups seated outside must be smaller than 30 people
- 21 June – All restrictions will be lifted, and nightclubs will be allowed to re-open
Once again the hospitality sector will be putting everything in place to get ready for “The Great Return” of 2021.
